Method/Apparatus/Procedure:
The determination of the solubility of water in tetrachloroethene was based on the infrared spectroscopic method. A UR-20 spectrophotometer was used with 2 cm cuvettes and the windows made of KBr. The spectra were recorded at 3600-810 cm-1, and the absorbance at 3702 cm-1 was found by the baseline method. Standard mixtures of tetrachloroethene and water were used for the calibration graphs. The results obtained were compared with measurements made by the method of cloud point1 and a Karl Fischer titration.
Source and Purity of Materials:
- Distilled.
- "Ch" brand, treated with Na2CO3 solution, dried with CaCl2 and P2O5 and then distilled before use.
Estimated Errors:
Ambient temperature: ±0.5 K.
Mass concentration (m/v) (1): Not specified.
