Volume 77. Nitroalkanes with Water or Organic Solvents: Binary and Multicomponent Systems, p 23

Original Measurements

Stein, A.; Allegra, J. C.; Allen, G. F.; J. Chem. Phys. 55, 4265-9 (1971).

Variables:

Temperature: 299.574 K

Prepared by:

N.I. Lisov, V.P. Sazonov

Method/Apparatus/Procedure:

The synthetic method was used. The critical separation temperatures were determined by visual observation of the appearance of a meniscus. Critical temperatures determined in separate closed tubes and in the viscometers agreed within experimental error. Solutions were prepared from weighed amounts of the pure components. All manipulations were carried out in a dry box to eliminate contamination by moisture.

Source and Purity of Materials:
  1. Purified by double distillation and by preparative gas chromatography; purity 99.97 mole% by GLC.
  2. Phillips; research grade; purity 99.99 mole%.

Nitroethane with 3-Methylpentane

Components:

(1) Nitroethane, $\ce{ C2H5NO2 }$; [79-24-3] NIST WebBook
(2) 3-Methylpentane, $\ce{ C6H14 }$; [96-14-0] NIST WebBook

Experimental Values:

The upper critical solution temperature was reported to be 26.424°C (299.692 K, compilers) at x1 = 0.5000 (100 w1 = 46.56, compilers).
